Prince’s music is changing into a stage musical — finally.

Producer Orin Wolf introduced Monday that he’s creating a stage model of Purple Rain — the 1984, vaguely autobiographical movie that made Prince a megastar and gained him an Oscar for Greatest Unique Music Rating. Within the movie model, Prince starred as The Child, an rising musician on the Minneapolis rock scene.

Wolf’s credit embrace the Tony Award-winning The Band’s Go to — one other movie-turned-musical. He has already enlisted playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins to jot down the brand new musical’s e book; Jacobs-Jenkins is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his performs Gloria and Everyone. Additionally on board is director Lileana Blain-Cruz, a Tony Award nominee for The Pores and skin of Our Tooth at Lincoln Heart.

Different info, together with when and the place this musical shall be launched, has but to be introduced; it’s seemingly that Purple Rain, like most different musicals, would have a tryout run off-Broadway or outdoors of town earlier than trying a run on Broadway.

Prince died in 2016 and not using a will. His property and the rights to his music have been solely settled in 2022.
